Program Notes
The program opens with the Northwest premiere of Lukas Foss’ “Salomon Rossi Suite” and Foss’ “Renaissance Concerto,” that was described by its distinguished American composer as a “handshake across the centuries.” Foss wrote the Concerto for world-renowned guest soloist, flutist Carol Wincenc, who performs the work in synch with the concert’s theme: melodic, rhythmic and harmonic Renaissance motifs and moods composed by 20th century masters.

Following intermission, the Orchestra returns with Giovanni Gabrieli’s “Canzona Per Sonare,” and Peter Warlock’s “Capriol Suite (for String Orchestra).” The Orchestra’s finale surrounds the audience in a Renaissance musical embrace, past and present: Ottorino Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 1.”
