Baal Shem (Three Pictures of Chassidic Life) :: Ernest Bloch with Brandon Garbot (Concertmaster of PYP),Violin
Story of an Hour (world premiere) :: Michael Valenti
The PCO honors two world-renowned musical giants and Northwest region residents. Honoring long-time Portland Youth Philharmonic composer/conductor Jacob Avshalomov’s 90th birthday, the world premiere of Avshalomov’s “Chintimini Turns” leads the program. For composer Ernest Bloch’s 50th anniversary, the PCO performs Bloch’s “Baal Shem”. Guest soloist, Portland Youth Philharmonic concertmaster Brandon Garbot, symbolically links Bloch and Avshalomov’s artistic legacies. The second part of the program presents the world premiere of a one act opera, “Story of an Hour,” by the extraordinary New York composer Michael Valenti. This chamber opera is the second act of a three part work, A Christmas Trilogy, composed for the Portland Chamber Orchestra. All three are performed on the same stage set, a mansion in Bath, England, but each reveals its own story and takes place in its own time.
